Being situated at the foothills of the Glencoe mountains in Scotland, the site offers picturesque views and extreme climatic conditions. To design something new for Netflix, what was missing from the modern office is a link to nature.
The core philosophy of the design was to create an environment where people can be more creative, think more clearly, and work with freedom.
The entry showcases the duo of glass spheres housing an entrance foyer and a cafeteria inside the existing structure to celebrate the Scottish architecture amidst the landscape and seating that are open to the dome. This cafeteria allows tourists as it forms a halt for people on their way to skiing.
The tunnels lead the employees into the corporate and creative zone shells which become the private zones. Each of these buildings has reducing floor plates thus providing stepped terrace gardens that overlook the botanical gardens below with different kinds of seating and walkways amidst nature. The interiors have also been planned creatively. The idea is to get away from your desk and work in a park or a garden. The terraces of these buildings house swimming pools and multipurpose halls open to the sky thus having a 360-degree view.
The microclimate in these domes and shells can be controlled by horticulturalists in a room below and hidden devices monitor humidity and light levels thus tackling the extreme site conditions. Thus, the structure provides its employees an informal interactive work environment and truly becomes iconic in form and function.
