Competition Brief:
The competition focuses on identitying metal objects that have been forgotten and repurpose them into a functional typology of a residence.
Narrative:
The Indian naval ships are the principal manifestation of India’s maritime power, they stand as a symbol of bravery, valor and pride. However, after decades of service, during decommissioning, the ships are abandoned and the historic carrier is forgotten and sold as scrap instead of being preserved.
The proposed 35 kilometer-long coastal road project along Mumbai’s western coast which aims to ‘connect people and places’ threatens the socio-economic and cultural identity of the Kolis , the original residents of Mumbai, as it would block their access to the sea and deplete the fish stock that they have been dependent on for decades.
Our project aims at creating socially inclusive and environmentally resilient spaces considering the unique qualities, traditions, and needs of the Worli Koliwada to create a sense of equality, belonging and pride among residents, using parts of the Indian naval ships in a way the true identity of each ship as well as that of the Koli community is preserved. Just as the naval ships break through the attacks of the enemy to safeguard the coast, our design is empowering the Koli community by breaking through the coastal road overpowering the community.
We ship the Koliwala over the coastal road!
